For entertainment
Iowa Gridiron is a hobby project: projected point spreads, totals, power ratings and a season archive for Iowa high school football, built by one fan for other fans. Nothing here is advice of any kind. Iowa does not permit wagering on high school sports, and the lines on this site exist to make Friday nights more interesting to talk about, not to bet on.
Where the data comes from
Every score on this site comes from Brent Moore's Iowa Scores Project at bcmoorerankings.com — a remarkable, decades-long effort to archive every Iowa high school football result, current seasons from the IHSAA and historical seasons from newspaper archives, each row credited to its archivist and source page. Class, district and conference assignments per season come from the same project. The IHSAA's Ratings Percentage Index formula and playoff qualification rules are from iahsaa.org. His published lines appear next to ours as a second opinion; they are never an input to our model.
The ratings, lines, totals, playoff odds and everything derived from them are ours, computed from those scores. Brent is not responsible for any of it.
How accurate is it
Not perfectly. Historical scores were transcribed from newspapers, and newspapers made mistakes: scores reversed, digits off by one, occasionally a wrong winner in a close game. Where we have found and confirmed an error against a yearbook, program or other primary source, it is corrected (4 so far) and noted. Everything else is as the source has it. Treat old records, streaks and season results as very good but not certain, and expect the model's numbers to carry the usual uncertainty of any model — the Model page reports exactly how far off it has been.
If you know a score is wrong and can point to something that shows the right one — a yearbook, a program, a clipping — use the report link next to the game on any season page and it will be fixed and credited.
What the numbers mean
A team's rating is its projected margin against an average team on a neutral field, fitted over every Iowa game in a season with last season as a fading prior. The line is the difference in ratings plus one point for home field, printed sportsbook-style on the favorite. Totals come from a separate tempo fit. Win probability follows from the line and how far the model has typically missed for games of that class. Playoff odds replay the remaining schedule a few thousand times under the IHSAA's rules. Details are on the Model page.
